Man, my child, is like water, nothing can stop him..

“The horror cannot be talked about, because it is alive”, says the poet.

May it, therefore, be exhibited without falling into the trap of the terror loving TV news, without resorting to the easy thrill of a romance story? This question consumed us for an entire semester. How is it possible for all of us who live in Lesvos to attempt an exhibition on the refugee crisis, keeping the difficult balance between our emotions and our critical view? How is it possible and legitimate to manage in an exhibition a drama that continues to evolve in front of us? How can we put history in the museum at the same time that history is being written?

It took us several hours of stormy discussions. Dozens of ideas were put forth. We felt excited, disappointed, afraid, determined. We finally found out that we had a lot to say, as we realized that talking about the “refugees” should not mean to expose ‘them’, namely those listed in Moria’s hot spot, but to expose ourselves. Us who welcome, who cherish, who tolerate, who are indignant or simply indifferent. Us who carry inside our heart the sweet memory of an Asia Minor’ grandfather, us who experienced the lack of a parent immigrant, us who become fugitives whenever we feel that we do not fit in place, us who feel strangers whenever we seem to differ. Us who barely survived of the sinking of a dream for a better life in a promising illusory paradise.

This exhibition is a small collection of testimonies. All that we could capture in the river of moments that flows next to us. Because history, as well as man, my child, is like water. Nothing stops them.
