Participatory exhibition design: theoretical and methodological issues
Ph.D. Candidate: Konstantina Nikolopoulou
The present research proposal aims to study the appropriate terms and the procedure that needs to be followed in order to design and implement exhibitions through participatory processes. During a time when the involvement of the visitor comprises a desideratum for the exhibition experience, some curators proceed further in encouraging the visitors’ participation already from the exhibition designing process. Terms such as “participation”, “co-design” and “co-creation” enriched the academic vocabulary, while creating -at the same time- important comprehension gaps related to the actual involvement of non-experts in a normally top-down procedure. On the other hand, various exhibitions are often designed and implemented outside museums, by communities and unofficial entities, without the help of an expert. Their subject is usually related to social issues and the decision making through all stages of design and implementation is made through participatory procedures, proving that creating an exhibition may also be a “bottom-up” process. The lack of academic bibliography that captures properly this phenomenon, abroad as well as in Greece, results in important research gaps as far as the terms and conditions for the coexistence of the two parts, in the frame of the exhibition design. At the same time, the various terms used to describe any kind of non-experts’ contribution to the process and their frequently misuse by the experts, prove the confusion existed among the scientific papers which attempt to describe this practice. In addition to that, our scarce knowledge concerning the frequency in which participatory methods in designing exhibitions are used, as well the way they may evolve, reenforce our blurry perspective related to its aims and effectiveness when chosen. While conducting my dissertation, I intent to study the research issues individually following three steps: a) Through the theoretical investigation of the various aspects of the participatory design, the individual parts in which is formed and the sense of collectivity used in various ways, I aim to comprehend how a group of people of different origin may organise, cooperate and contribute for a common cause, in the frame of the exhibition design, b) Gathering and evaluating case studies of implemented participatory exhibition design, abroad as well as locally, in museums as well as other places outside museums, will give me the opportunity to better identify my research subject and possibly pose additional research questions, and c) After studying and evaluating the gathered material, I shall try to propound a proper methodology for designing and implementing an exhibition using participatory methods and describe in details its terms and stages. Furthermore, I shall attempt to apply it on a pilot exhibition, with the help of a working group that will be created during my research. The evaluation of the pilot’s results will then allow me to come to valuable conclusions concerning the appropriate conditions needed, the value, as well as the disadvantages of such and attempt in Greece, for the participants, the various entities and the public of the exhibition.
